ITINERARY (7 days)
Day 1 – La Paz & Bahía Balandra
Afternoon cruise from La Paz to Bahía Balandra. There’s an option to snorkel with whale sharks from November to April.
La Paz is the gateway to the Sea of Cortez, a quiet city with wonderful weather. Despite being the capital of Baja California, it remains a peaceful place with a serene harbor that enchants its visitors. Due to its numerous reefs and exquisite biodiversity, La Paz Bay is one of the world’s premier diving and snorkeling destinations. Besides all the water sports you can enjoy, La Paz offers every activity you can possibly imagine. Whether you’re an adventurer or a casual observer, the natural beauty, rich history, and the Sea of Cortez will provide ample fun, adventure, and relaxation.
Located about 30 minutes north of La Paz, Bahía Balandra is a picturesque strip of clear sand nestled in a protected cove and bounded by high rocky cliffs. With knee-deep turquoise waters stretching for kilometers contrasting sharply with reddish-brown rocks and a sprinkling of lush green foliage, it’s not hard to understand why such a beautiful beach is one of La Paz’s most popular spots.
Day 2 – Isla Espíritu Santo
Start your day with a sail to Espíritu Santo Island. Once you’ve arrived, disembark and head to the coast for a hike or enjoy a day soaking up the sun at Candelero Beach. In the afternoon, take a swim and explore the various water sports available.
Known for its fantastic kayak excursions, close and personal encounters with friendly sea lion pups, and some of the most spectacular beaches in Baja California Sur, Espíritu Santo Island is an idyllic destination. Diving and snorkeling enthusiasts will delight in the abundance of marine life beneath the water’s surface; around the reefs, you’ll find parrotfish, angelfish, trumpetfish, and more, while dolphins, rays, turtles, and whales swim nearby. The islets at the northern end of Espíritu Santo Island are famous for their sea lion colony, which feels right at home on this island. Admire the adorable pups from a distance as you dive into the water to swim alongside them.
Day 3 – Los Islotes & Ensenada Grande
A remote and uninhabited island with water so blue and clear that you can see the sand swirling around your toes, Ensenada Grande is an absolute delight. Located on Partida Island, Ensenada Grande is an excellent spot for diving and snorkeling.
Day 4 – Isla San Francisquito & Bahía Amortajada
Cruise to San Francisquito Island and Bahía Amortajada. Climb to the top of the island to enjoy stunning views of Baja California Sur to the west and the Sea of Cortez to the east. Don’t miss seeing the saltwater lagoon.
San Francisquito Island boasts an incredibly picturesque crescent shape, with pristine shores and crystal-clear waters. It was once home to gold miners and pearl seekers. The fascinating landscape is dotted with colorful rocky cliffs and rugged terrain. Hiking trails crisscross the island, leading you to discover different spots like the saltwater lagoon. Climb the hills for the best views of Baja California to the west and the Sea of Cortez to the east.
Day 5 – Isla San José & Isla Santa Cruz
Start your day early and cruise to San José Island. Discover the rocky cliffs adorning the coast and enjoy a relaxing swim. In the afternoon, cruise to Santa Cruz Island.
San José is possibly one of the most beautiful islands in Mexico. Despite its small size, it boasts an impressive landscape with colorful rocky cliffs adorning the coast, seemingly rolling down into the bright blue waters. To the south of the island, you’ll encounter Bahía Amortajada. Home to a large mangrove estuary that attracts a variety of bird species seeking refuge on the island, such as pelicans, herons, and ospreys. This mangrove lagoon is also unique as it’s rare to find such density in a desert location.
Day 6 – Agua Verde, Isla Santa Catalina & Isla Monserrate
Cruise to Agua Verde to enjoy its turquoise sea and unparalleled moorings. In the afternoon, sail to Santa Catalina Island. Don’t forget to grab your snorkel and discover the stunning marine life beneath the ocean’s surface.
Santa Catalina and Monserrate are two of the five main islands protected by Loreto Bay National Park. These uninhabited islands are a true delight for travelers who come to dive or snorkel, as their waters are home to diverse marine life ranging from colorful parrotfish, angelfish, and pufferfish to gray, blue, and humpback whales, as well as dolphins, and much more.
Day 7 – Parque nacional Bahía de Loreto & Isla Del Carmen
Start your day with a cruise to Loreto Bay National Park. Enjoy swimming and water activities. In the afternoon, head to Monserrate Island.
Many refer to Isla del Carmen as the crown jewel of the Sea of Cortez. With striking red basalt rising sharply from the azure blue sea and green cacti dotting the landscape, this backdrop is almost too stunning and perfect to be real. Being the largest island in Loreto Bay National Park, Isla del Carmen is a dream destination for swimming, snorkeling, hiking, or simply lounging on the beach and soaking in the abundant beauty around you.
Loreto feels like somewhere caught between the old and new world. Cobblestone streets, pottery shops, and teenagers practicing hip-hop together in the square combine to create a uniquely discoverable atmosphere in this town. Walk along the beachfront promenade where the stunning blue water lies, home to the magnificent Loreto Bay National Park. This oceanfront with its stunning nearby islands became a Marine National Park on July 19, 1996, with 797 square miles of protected area from pollution and uncontrolled fishing.
